As we observe the blessed month of Ramadan, I take a moment to reflect on the values of compassion, gratitude, and community that define this sacred time. I write to you not only as a board member of Opening Doors, but also as a refugee from Afghanistan and a dedicated community member here in Sacramento.
Over the years, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact that our organization has on the lives of those seeking safety and a new beginning. The journey from fleeing conflict to building a secure, hopeful life is a path paved with resilience, and Opening Doors has been a steadfast companion along the way.
Today, we face significant challenges. Recent cuts in funding for refugee resettlement programs and the restrictive cap on refugee admissions have placed a considerable strain on our resources. These changes hinder our ability to provide essential services— services that offer not just shelter and legal support, but also the promise of rebuilding lives and communities. During Ramadan, as I fast and reflect, I am reminded of our shared duty to support one another, especially during times of hardship.
I am reaching out to ask for your support.
