To apply for a volunteer position, you must first attend the Volunteer Orientation. Our Volunteer Orientations are held every first Wednesday of every month. Refugee Resettlement Volunteer Opportunities

 

Airport Reception Volunteer

Assist ODI in welcoming these arriving refugees to their new home in Sacramento, and be the first smiling face they see when they arrive at the airport!*  Airport Reception Volunteers help families gather their belongings at the airport, drive them to their new homes in Sacramento, and help them get situated for their first night in the United States.  Airport Reception Volunteers play an important role in the initial reception of families, and will be someone these individuals remember for years to come.
*Airport pick-ups typically occur Monday-Thursday between 9:00pm and 11:00pm.

 

 

Navigator Volunteer

Newly arrived refugees have many responsibilities and appointments in their first few weeks after arrival.  Navigator Volunteers walk, drive, and/or take the bus with families to various appointments at the ODI office, health clinics, and school enrollment of children.*  Navigator Volunteers assist individuals in arriving on time, communicating with staff, and learning the route for future appointments.
*Appointments typically occur Monday-Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

 

Organize A Drive

Refugees flee their homes at a moment’s notice, leaving their lives and belongings behind, and arrive in Sacramento with only a few suitcases in hand.  Refugee Welcome Kits provide families with basic household items necessary for them start their new lives in Sacramento.  Help collect donations in the form of Refugee Welcome Kits by mobilizing your small group, family, church, or school to collect needed items!*

Refugee Mentorship

Want to make a difference in the community? This is your chance!

 

As a refugee mentor, you will assist with the following:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Helping them access public transportation
  • Obtaining a library card
  • Applying for a California ID/ Driver’s License
  •  

    Each task should take about 2-4 hours. You will meet with the mentee at a time that is convenient for both of you. Meetings are 1-on-1 and there are no minimum hour requirements. You may leave the mentorship program once all tasks are completed or you can mentor more clients.

     

     

    Special Event Volunteers

     

    Opening Doors seeks volunteers to assist with the events that raise awareness about current issues and fundraise for our clients. These events take place primarily in Sacramento and Yolo Counties and utilize volunteers in a number of capacities. Event volunteers assist with outreach, venue set-up and clean up, and play a crucial role in ensuring that the events run smoothly and effectively.
